Elderberry tincture and swine flu info

Taking care of yourself and your crew

Lots of questions. I'll try to answer them as best I can.

Type of elderberries:
1. From everything I have read, the only ones studies have been done on are the Sambucus nigra type. There are other types of elderberries and some things I've read say that these other types don't provide the same medicinal value that the Sambucus nigra does. So I wouldn't go out and just pick the elderberries in the back yard and think they will work. Stick with Sambucus nigra.

2. yes the berries...not the flowers.

3. one pound of the berries produces I guess around 4-5 pints. It depends actually how much you fill up your jars with berries when you make it. I think I have about 7 pounds worth. I haven't made it all into the tincture yet. I did a pound back a year ago and misread the directions and filled 2/3 of the jars up instead of 1/3. It only gave me a few pints but its concentrated stuff. I still kept it.

Best thing to do is make a pounds worth and then judge for yourself.

Karen's idea of dividing up the pound bag amongst 3 quarts might work. I have some quart jars so I may try that.

Hope this all helps.

My new mad scientist brew is sitting the shelf aging as we speak.......

I used about 2 lbs of dried berries.
10 pint jars.
1 gallon of vodka.

I will see how long this actually lasts once it has properly aged and I and the Family are taking our daily dose.

Found a bit more info on elderberries and flu. Not certain about the source since I've never heard of it, but FWIW...

The Pope exorcises the flu with black elderberries
Tuesday, 11 August 2009

"...In a recent randomised, double blind, placebo controlled study, black elderberry extract was shown to reduce the duration of influenza by around four days(1). This study adds weight to earlier research which found that within three days, the symptoms of influenza were relieved in nearly 90 per cent of cases treated with black elderberry extract, compared to six days in the placebo group(2).

Black elderberries are thought to contain a unique compound, which coats viruses and prevents them from penetrating and infecting healthy cells. As a result viruses, such as flu, are unable to replicate. The body’s white blood cells are then able to ingest the infected cells, effectively removing the virus from the body.
Black elderberries also contain high levels of natural antioxidants known as flavonoids which help strengthen the immune system against attack; indeed the black elderberry has twice the antioxidant capacity of blueberries and significantly higher antioxidant capability of cranberries(3).

Expert immunologist and registered medical herbalist Dr Serene Foster says: “Black elderberries have been traditionally used to help protect against a range of viral ailments, including flu, because of their natural immune health properties. Recent research has confirmed that these dark purple fruits contain a unique compound which helps the immune system to fight back against various strains of flu.”...

Hi renaura--

Assuming you have black elderberries (the other sort won't work), here's a link to some instructions that include fresh:

http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=331406

Fill a qt. canning jar 1/3 full of dried elderberries (1/2 full if using fresh berries)
fill the jar with cheap 80/90 proof unflavored vodka or brandy,
cap jar, shake, and store in a cool dark cabinet for 7-10 days.

Strain berries, and fill jar until full from another jar so each jar contains 1 quart of extract - you'll need 3 quarts per person for treatment, and a spare quart for preventative dosages.

For those that need more info - here is a link to the
documentation and lab studies on the stuff
http://www.herbalgram.org/files/pdfs/elderberry-scr.pdf

I've decided that, just for fun, since it's almost the 20th, I'll wait for the new moon on the 20th as the instructions say, to make mine lol.

Take some time.

I just "discovered" vitamin D3 (again) - it's in the first post.

FYI-- i finally got my order in and made my batch. 2 lbs w/ vodka. after straining I have 10 pts. I'm placing a second order and will make some qts this time and have the rest for storage or barter.

Question ? - just double checking the daily dosage - Adults - 1 Tablespoon ?
Question ? Infected dosage ? 2 tablespoons every 8 hrs ?

also, is there any side effects, and or Interactions that you know of. How safe is this. Especially with High Blood Pressure ?
Please advise?

thx

Ordered my berries tonight after procrastinating.

Concerning the vodka, I understand the berry absorbs it, but to what extent?
I know some that have religious issues on alcohol.

Proper dosage level for a little angel under 5?
