Chances are good I would avoid them and be better off alone.

But should I desire to join their community, it would be becuase they have a sustainable base (ie homestead/farm with flocks and herds). In that case I can offer them experience, knowledge and skills to hatch, deliver, shelter, care for, feed, water, bath, medicate, trim, comb, curry, train, saddle, harness, yoke, hobble, poke, fence, pasture, castrate, milk, shear, pluck, scale, de-shell, de-horn, train, kill, scald, skin, tan, butcher, wrap, smoke, jerk, pickle, marinate, roast, fry, bake, broil, BBQ, stew, serve, EAT, clean up, dispose of any critter that walks, flies, or swims. That doesn't even touch on traps, snares, fishing, forage, or hunting. And then there is plant based food....

But what can they do for me?

MM is a quiet and peace-loving man. When he stands and speaks, listen, because it's worth it.

Why should you let me in? Because I'm a Viking.

I'm willing to work for my keep and I'm willing to learn what I need to in order to adapt and help out.

Further talk? Beyond camping, backcountry packing, and wilderness survival - gee I haven't had a chance to practice all the homesteading skills and practices I've been learning about. Just little bits here and there.

What's the big picture? What's in for me beyond a group?

In? Make good on working. Be ready to deedee at first wiff bad juju.

Cold recption? Move on. Either wing to nicer climes or begin a group of their rejects.

Begin plotting raiding parties.

Arms.
Shelter.
Potable water.
Food.

Sometimes rejects work harder and smarter without the attitude.

Or not. Move on.

By the way (I know, 30 seconds blown  )

My wife, before the calamity, was a day care worker, was studying to be a full time teacher, has degrees in Biology and Geography (as I have a degree in Geography), and loves to work with native plants. I have a young daughter that is able to help with the younger ones, which she loves to do, and is full of curiosity. I've worked hard to nurture this so she learns.

Catch: my wife requires daily medication to stay healthy and my daughter may at some point need medical attention for a corrected heart condition that can go south.

*Kidney transplants and heart problems don't make for a happy scenario in my world.*

We are a family, I fight for them. I provide for them. They help when and where they can.

I've shown you mine, your turn.

So good day.

They would have to tell me what they are looking for in a new member.

I've always tried to be a "Jack of all trades, Master of none". So I can tailor my response to what they need.
And I'm still adding to my trade bag. I just recently learned how to setup, wire and fire complicated fireworks shows. I'll be licensed by next year. :D

The Point

Postby Joe on 07 Jul 2009 06:50

The point of this post was just to get y'all to think about yourselves as someone else might perceive you.
What DO you have to offer to a group?
Why SHOULD a group let you in?

I personally don't care - it is an excercise for you to do some self evaluation.

"What are my strong points?"
"What can I bring to the table?" (as a person - not your barn full of supplies although sometimes that is helpful)
"What are my weak points?"
"What can I do to quickly improve my skillsets/abilities?"

I get a fair bit of mail from folks looking to join groups and asking advice. I get less mail asking how to form a group.
It comes to this: If you had a group, would you let you in?

Life is a journey - we should constantly move forward.
It's hard to move forward if we don't know where we are.
